Prom's are a thing over here now.
I've noticed over the last few years (pandemic aside) that more schools are having prom's.
I know that in America it's been a done thing for years. I know that from watching Buffy and The OC (and I'm certain one tree hill featured a prom, but I could be wrong. And I think Dawson's creek, too) ๐
My American teen shows aside, I do know that it's a big thing in America with prom Queens and kings and pretty dresses. I just don't know when it became a "thing" over here.
I'm not a parent, and I only have 1 friend that has a child old enough to have finished school (she had her son at 18) and he didn't have a prom (2018 leaver) but I have a best friend who has a step daughter, who didn't have a prom (2020 leaver. Pandemic) yet her oldest half-sister had her prom last night (her other half sister is 2 years younger)
And another friend of mine has two neices who both had proms (2019 and this year) so I can't really tell when it took off.
When I left school (late 90's) my comprehensive school did nothing. But my primary school (1993 leaver) put on a school disco for the people going to "big school" which was attended by 3 people in my year (myself included) and most of the people who went to "big school" the year in front.
I think people in my year were just excited to go to "big school" so didn't wanna remember primary school. Me, I hated "big school" (being bullied and yet I was expelled for having panic attacks and being "disruptive", yeah, I loved not being able to breathe) but I loved primary school.
My anxiety started at a young age, and when we went on a 4 day trip away, my head master was really concerned about me, he even had a stand by incase I had to be sent home. It was a small primary school and going from that to a huge one (that I didn't wanna go to anyway, but due to a council mix up, I was enrolled in) was tough.
And we didn't have a prom.
