"manhunter" 1986
Ok, confession time.
I didn't particularly like "The silence of the lambs" and "Hannibal" or "Red dragon". They were ok, but I've watched them once and really don't have the desire to watch them again.
But I absolutely love "Manhunter", it's one of my all-time favourite films. I think I know why I love this but not the whole "universe".
1) I first watched it without realizing that it was part of the whole "universe". I know, pretty dumb. 🤦
2) I watched the film in the middle of catching "Crime Story" (one of the most underrated TV shows ever) for the first time on a re-run. And some of the cast of "Crime Story" are in the film.
3) William Peterson (AKA Gil Grissom in the brilliant CSI) is brilliant as Will Graham. I love CSI so that's another reason I watched the film.
4) Michael Mann. He's one of my favourite directors (he also directed "Crime Story") and I love the "80's music video" kind of feel of the film. It's disturbing but it doesn't look bleak and depressing.
I also didn't get into the TV show "Hannibal" as it changed too much (Freddie was a woman and she didn't get killed) so I didn't like that. Especially as the most disturbing scene in "Manhunter" involves Freddie, in my opinion.
It's a pure 1980's film and I love it for that.
